Botox, Fillers, and PDO Threads

Deborah Mauro, DNAP, CRNA
I have a doctorate degree in anesthesia with a sub-specialty in pain management.  I am trained and certified as an aesthetic injection and my specialty in aesthetics is PDO threads.  In 2016, PDO threads became FDA approved in the United States.  I started my PDO thread training in 2017 and have continually taken advanced courses since.
What are PDO threads?
PDO threads are medical grade suture.  Basically, there are 2 types.  Lifting threads and smooth threads.  The lifting threads have cogs or barbs that attach under the skin and lift the skin and fat pads back to where they once were.  Smooth threads build collagen and can be used where the skin is thin and wrinkled.
The Procedure
I will numb your skin with injectable lidocaine.  Then, pilot hole is created with a needle.  The lifting threads are preloaded into cannula, which will be inserted into the hole.  I will guide the cannula under the skin, targeting the sagging area. Then the cannula is removed and the threads stays behind.  I will massage the area, which engages the thread and provides the lift.
Smooth threads are small so the area does not need an injectable lidocaine.  It feels the same as getting Botox.  Upon request, a topical numbing agent can be applied.  Most people don’t need it but it is available.
